LG SL80 and SL90 LCD HDTVs

August 18th, 2009 by admin

LG tonight chose its Summer Line Show to unveil a new look for its HDTVs that involves two new models. Both the SL80 and the SL90 have a “seamless” design that attempts to blend the bezel, LCD and speakers into a single piece. Appropriately, they also have more advanced feature sets; the flagship SL90 is LED-backlit and generates a company-best 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio while also keeping the TV thin at 1.15 inches. It also has a 240Hz refresh rate to reduce motion artifacts and an ambient light sensor to adjust its brightness on the fly.
The SL80 has all the same features as the SL90 but switches to a conventional fluorescent backlight to trim the price. This brings the contrast ratio down to 150,000:1 and thickens the display to 1.8 inches.

The SL80 ships first and will come in 42-inch ($1,600), 47-inch ($1,900) and 55-inch ($2,800) models in August. LG isn’t yet ready to commit to a price or ship date for the SL90 but does say 42- and 47-inch versions will be ready by the end of the year.
